(LITTLE ROCK) On Nov. 12, 2011, funding was approved for the first Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus Outreach Scholarship for students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in Arkansas. The ADBC established the scholarship to increase the number of qualified, yet underrepresented, minority college students entering the field of public service.
Two scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded to currently enrolled full-time students at Arkansas HBCUs for the 2011-2012 school year to assist with education-related expenses. Participating HBCUs include Arkansas Baptist College and Philander Smith College in Little Rock and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The ADBC believes no student who is otherwise qualified should be prevented from continuing his or her education after graduation from high school because of an inability to pay for education. “Increases in college tuition have become a hardship on most Arkansas students seeking to further their education. The goal of our new outreach scholarship is to help alleviate this hardship while also training a new generation of public servants,” said Kasey Summerville, ADBC president.
Eligible applicants who have completed at least 24 credit hours must submit an essay addressing the mission of the ADBC and show financial need, along with other requirements. Recipients will be announced at the organization’s annual King Kennedy dinner in February. The deadline for applications is Dec. 19, 2011.
The mission of the Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus is to achieve proportionate representation of Black democratic public officials, elected or appointed in Arkansas; foster the election of and monitor the performance of all elected officials; disseminate information to the Black community through effective communication; assure that all governmental policies, programs and practices are filtered through the Black perspective in order that the results of such policies and programs accrue equitably to the benefit of Black Arkansans.
